Is your data at risk

Hosted Cloud Services, News, Technology

This weekend started an annual American tradition, the inaugural kickoff of NFL football. Televisions were tuned to favorite games everywhere. Of course some of us are not content with just watching these games, we have to be a part of them, hence fantasy football. There are various websites, NFL, Yahoo, ESPN, CBSSports where you can join and build your own team with real NFL players.

This brought up a question about “the cloud”. Is this considered the cloud?

Yes – the above sites can be considered cloud based.

Why – because you store data online and manipulate that data.

How – You enter information about yourself (name, email, etc…) create a team name, draft your NFL players with other team owners. Then you review stats, boy there are a lot analytical data points to review.

So – the main question here is where and how secure is your data? That is the main topic of this article.

Not all cloud solutions are the same, some follow IT governance regulations while other might, shall we say – cut some corners. How do you know?

To start, be careful when using any cloud service outside your country, in my case – the United States. Many overseas providers do not have to comply with our laws or they may not even know about our regulations and laws, why should they – they are in a different country.

Second, security may be less of a concern in another country than it is here in the United States or your country.

Third, Some may argue this point, but in my opinion, overseas software developers are still behind in the latest technology and techniques when it comes to writing code, let alone security code that conforms to your mandatory privacy regulations.

Fourth, you have little recourse, legal or otherwise if something goes wrong. Many countries may not recognize your laws and ignore any legal proceedings that may originate from your country.

lastly, all your data is stored outside of your country.

Let me be clear in stating that I am not trying to discount the value of other counties software developers, laws or morales. I am simply stating the fact that you may be at a disadvantage if something should occur that needs to proceed into our legal system.

So what does this have to do with football? Nothing really, although this does illustrate that the cloud is in places you would never suspect. I have mentioned many times that people are using the cloud without even knowing it – this is another example.

If you would like, we provide a Free Technical Assessment, this can be beneficial to new and startup companies that are not sure where to start. You can always find our cloud and hosted services in the right column of this page or by simply going to our website at Raven Cloud Computing.
